    Posted: 13 Jan 09 at 21:16

Hi,

I have started sleeping in my van now, but I cant open the rear doors from inside when the van is locked. Is their a way to get round this? as I think its a bit dangerous to be locked in!

On a similar question, is it possible to stop the doors auto locking when you drive it above a certain speed, I find it annoying to have to stop the engine and take the key out to press the key fob, to let someone in the back.

Thanks for any advice, hopefully its as easy as turning off the seatbelt alarm!

Alex

On my 2004 Kombi you have to press the lock button on the fob twice and the dead locking is cancelled, thus the doors open from the inside with a couple of pulls.

As for the other thing, locking as you drive, I don't know, mine don't do it.

Dont you have a button on thedrivers door with a key printed on it?, if you do thats what locks the doors and unlocks them, when keys are in ignition, find it quite handy when driving through ruogh estates stopping car jackings, or van jackings in this case.

The last loan vehicle Heron gave me didn't have the button on the drivers door so it was not possible to lock the door from the inside, nor did the door lock automatically as you picked up speed.

That little button is used quite often around these parts, though to be fair, no one has ever tried to open my doors recently. Last time it happened to me was in Liverpool in my Transit about 20 years ago, a couple of scouse scallys chanced their arm at some lights, fortunately I'd made the delivery and was empty.

I believe the auto locking can be set through Vagcom, the dealer should be able to change the setting easily.   Mine doesn't do it but I would definitely get rid if it did - one of my pet hates.

On opening the back door, it is possible pull on the rod that operates the lock (with the interior trim panel removed) to open the door so it should be possible to rig up a lever or something.   Might be a bit rough but it would be cheap...

There are a whole lot of locking/unlocking options that can be set by Vag-com/VCDS (or the dealer tools).

I have mine set up to lock (not deadlock) all doors as I drive away, and only unlock the driver's door when I remove the ignition.

I have the remote set to only unlock only the driver's door with one press, and unlock all doors when I double press the unlock button.

When I press the lock button once it deadlocks all doors (ie can't be opened with the internal handle), when I press it twice it only locks all doors (ie can be opened with two pulls on the internal handle).

If you usually carry passenger/s then other options may suit you better.

If you have an internal handle to open the rear door, then when you are sleeping in it if you only lock (rather than deadlock) the van you should be able to open the door from the inside with two pulls.

I strongly advise people not to deadlock a van when there is someone inside, as it could be very dangerous if they need to get out in a hurry if there is an emergency (eg danger of fire).

I`ll just repost this real life scenario as it happened to me, some guys on here might not have read it last time. I locked my keys in a Masterlock key safe that is fastened to the towing eye, jumped back in the van to put my wetsuit on, closing the door as I went. Just got me keks off when click click click all the doors autolocked. Couldn`t get any of `em open so had to climb out through the window which is a wind down manual fortunately. Fifteen stone of rubber clad fatty sqeezing out of a van window would have got me £200 on Youv`e Been Framed. It`s quite a drop to the floor as well. Seriously, a fire or some such emergency would have been disastrous for anyone not able to get out of the window. Think about it, you are locked in, flames licking yer arse, and you are trying to attract the attention of a passer by. If you do you still have to get them to comprehend a Masterlock combination lock, tell them the number, have them open it and then open the door of the ball of fire that your van has now become.

Thanks for your answers, sounds straight froward, but what is this VAGCOM thing? Is it only available at VW dealerships? or does anyone know somewhere that could do it in the Bristol area?

thanks

Is this the thing we're talking about? I take it the rest of the £60 goes on the software to change the door locking sequences etc?

thanks

Most of the VAG-COMS on ebay especially the ones under £200 like the MaxScan ones won't be able to do this type of thing.

Most are limited to resetting service lights and showing fault codes. They also don't show pending fault codes either which means waiting for the problem to happen about 6 times for a fault code to register.

So do you have a recommendation borg?

One that would do the job properly without too much expense.
