Video of Kids Colliding Head-to-Head During Football Drill Sparks Backlash
A viral clip is sparking controversy on Twitter for showing two young children engaging in potentially dangerous practices while playing football.
The video, which was posted on Tuesday, has amassed over 4 million views, and thousands are now weighing in on the situation. It's unclear who originally filmed the video, but Twitter user @Zeekncashe appears to have reposted it, along with the caption, "Are they too young to be doing this drill?"
The brief clip shows two children practicing a football drill. However, things go awry when their helmets meet in a brutal head-to-head collision. One of the kids is immediately launched to the ground, while the other stumbles and then falls.
Meanwhile, the adults filming the video can be heard laughing and hollering. "You're good," one of them says to the child who is still on the ground.
The clip is generating anger among professional athletes and sports commentators.
"This isn't funny at all. This culture at the youth level needs to change," tweeted former NFL player Geoff Schwartz.
"Words cannot begin to express my anger watching this clip...this is not football & whoever put this idiotic drill together & allowed an obvious mismatch should never be allowed near a football field or youth sports forever!" echoed Joel Klatt of Fox Sports. "This is child abuse disguised as competition."
"If you truly loved football, let alone these BOYS, you would never allow this to happen," wrote former NFL player Ross Tucker. "These coaches should be fired yesterday."
"Not only that but youth league coaches often fail to enforce even basic safety measures. That would've been an illegal hit (helmet to helmet) in college or the NFL, instead the coaches are hooting and hollering," added professor and MSNBC contributor Dr. Jason Johnson.
It wasn't just professionals who were upset by the footage. Parents and football-lovers flooded the replies, expressing concern over the drill and apparent lack of oversight.
"Who in their right minds thought this was a good idea for this age? Horrible," wrote one frustrated commenter.
"All these coaches should never touch a field ever again," said another.
Dissenting commenters were few and far between, though one sports satire account argued that the drills were an important part of learning the sport, to the chagrin of multiple users.
"As a youth football coaching legend," they wrote, "I encourage parents to have their kids do similar drills at much younger ages than this to ensure they are mentally ready. Those two kids learned more in this 5-second drill than they ever will in a full school year."
The possibility of youth players sustaining lasting head injuries through contact sports like football has become a growing concern in recent years. Head injuries of this nature are known to cause chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative brain disease.
